Breaking the cycle of violence:
Supporting Child Protection and Development in Colombia

AmanecerFundacion Amenecer, working with the International Child Development Programme (ICDP), has been invited by the Columbian Family Welfare Institute (ICBF) to be a partner in implementing its early childhood programme, providing early stimulation, education and comprehensive care to disadvantaged children who would otherwise be in the street, the fields or in the care of older children. In this second year of the pro- gramme, the participants are underprivileged children under 5 years old and their families in four municipalities of the Department of Quindio.

Resources are used for:

• Advocacy and start-up: activities include working with municipalities to ensure that more children from unprivileged families are able to participate in the programme. Staff is recruited, child friendly spaces are identified, and supervision and monitoring of the programme are put in place.

• Training of child-care staff: in the municipalities, staff is trained to facilitate better interactions between caregivers, children and their families.

• Logistics: Educational spaces used by the programme are made “child- friendly” (cleaning, painting of premises, purchase of necessary equipment). Transportation of staff is provided and nutritious snacks for children also.

• Food and Nutritional Supplements. Balanced nutrition is provided and a healthy lifestyle is promoted. Nutritional supplements are given to pregnant and nursing mothers.

This second phase of the programme is already finished.

In 2013, SD Canada’s contribution of CDN$5,000 has been taken care of by one donor.
